TRRC Adopt-a-Street Litter Pick Up

Get involved!  Time counts toward your annual assessment!

It's time again to help make the club's community a nicer place, to show the public that the club is a contributing member of the community, to foster better relations within the community and to get some inexpensive advertisement for the club. It's time to pick up litter.

As part of the Adopt-a-Street agreement with the city, we need to pick up litter along our adopted section 4 times a year. The area we have adopted is from the Lakewood/U.P. city boundary on Bridgeport Way (where the creek goes under the road) to 67th Ave. Then we go north on 67th Ave. to Cirque Dr. W. This is approximately one mile.

Before we pick up litter, we will meet at the TRRC to sign in and distribute equipment as needed.

The date scheduled at this time is:

  • Thursday, September 11th - Meet at 1700 hours

For questions or suggestions, call Dan Hacker at 565-8173

WANTED:  BASIC HANDGUN SAFETY INSTRUCTOR

A dedicated and knowledgeable individual to assume the responsibility of teaching TRRC's basic handgun safety course to both members and nonmembers. This individual would need to be an NRA-certified instructor and be willing to assume these duties on a long-term basis.

Interested parties should contact the club by phone (253-566-1341) or email shooter@tacomarifle.org.

SAFETY NOTICE
  • Members it is very important that you sign in with your name and your badge number before shooting. This is for your protection as well as the TRRC. You'll notice the steel plates that are placed on the opposite side of the six by ten beams above the exit of the pistol shooting range towards the targets. These are for safety reasons so that the bullets will not wonder into the air.

There is no cowboy shooting or fast drawing and shooting allowed. These rules are to protect our membership. If caught doing so, you may be terminated from membership! So beware! The Tacoma Rifle and Revolver ranges are for the shooting and usage of safe shooters. You'll also notice the following signs that have been posted recently at the different ranges. Follow these also or you may be in the same situation.

  • Members, you all need to follow safe shooting practices. One of those is to remove your magazine on your pistols and rifles and open your chamber when others are placing their targets or replacing their targets. This is a practice that appears to have fallen by the wayside in the past. Some of the new members are not aware of this regulation.

Another is to NOT point your pistol or rifle at another as you 'swing' around while just moving or talking to another. It doesn't matter if your gun is loaded or not! One of the rules that some are not following is that you have a tendency to go out in front of the 'shooting tables' that are set up and shoot from there. The rule of the range is that you shoot from or behind them, not in front. If you are found going in front of these to shoot, you also may be asked to speak to the board of directors.

  • There are six video cameras strategically located throughout the range. The presence of TRRC members are videotaped at the different ranges and on the property and electronically sent to several of the board members residences as they are being monitored. Remember, you are responsible for your guests that you bring onto the range.

FROM THE AIRGUN GUYS

During our "off " time, we have been busy getting ready for next season. The main Airgun range has been seeded and some weed killer has been applied to it in preparation for next season.

The Field Target lanes are a year long "labor of love" trying to stay ahead of the Blackberries. Not to mention that four trees came down during the last little breeze that have to be removed. The 2008 match dates have been confirmed for our various Airgun events. All the Field Targets are finally repaired and painted.

This coming season, we are going to offer USBR (United States Bench Rest) matches. Obviously, we will be in the Airgun Division. There is a group of guys down in Grants Pass, Oregon that have already "called us out??"  We used to shoot against them when BRV events were still being shot. They would travel up here and we would return the honors by going down there for matches several times a year. They are really a great bunch of guys, well, until we beat them at a match?

Last year, we tried out something new. We call it "Action AIR Pistol." We use primarily Umarex brand CO2 pistols and revolvers. Anyway, as I said, last year was a try this and that time.

We now have a pretty cool offering! The two types of events will alternate on an every other month basis. One "event" will be a "Bowling Pin" match and a "Pepper Popper with Falling Plates" match. Scoring will be combined fastest time for both events. This is a great event for those of you that want to shoot fast, but not have to move to do it!!

On the next month, we will hold a "Run and Gun" event. (you gotta move for this one!!) This event will have two stages. One stage will have 5 or more "positions" with 1 to 4 silhouettes that have to be hit and or scored. Also, one or the other course will have either a running target or a rifle position as well. Scoring will be a combination of time and hits.

If you might be interested in any of these events, check the calendar in your newsletter for match dates or you can contact me, Jim Benson. I am listed on your newsletter under Airgun.

Hope to see you there.

Jim

TRRC HIGHPOWER

Winter has set upon us and this discipline has a tendency to become dormant during inclement weather. Things get a bit messy when trying to shoot at 200, 300 and 600 yards without cover. But that is what separates us from the Bullseye Pistols Shooters. We don't fear the weather!

HOWEVER - since the main range has a bright shiny new roof, we can be comfortable and shoot 100 yard reduced targets.

As of Sept, the BOD has imposed a moratorium that will keep us from shooting at 300 yards until more stringent safety measures have been installed. I will attempt to have something in place for the CSM Rickard Memorial Match in April so once again we can shoot at 200, 300 and 600 yards.

And to further your shooting pleasure . . . I hope to cover the 600 yard firing line to keep us somewhat dry while belly shooting. The BOD has approved the purchase of "instant garages" that can be easily set up and removed.

Next match: I intend to hold a 100 yard reduced match on 23 December. It will be an 80 shot course of fire (with sighters). Cost will be $5 to cover materials. The match will be informal and a great practice opportunity. HOWEVER, safety will not be compromised. This would also be a good time for anyone who wishes to see how a HP match is conducted to stop by and talk with us.

2008 BENCHREST SCHEDULE

COME JOIN US -- FROM THE HUNTER EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Interested in becoming a Hunter Education Instructor? We always need new instructors who have the desire to garner the reward of seeing a smiling youth as they pass the test and join our ranks of hunting enthusiasts. Your hunting experience and knowledge is valuable to the new hunter. Share what you know! Conctact Bob Brown at 253-582-2726 to discuss.

SINGLE SHOT REPORT

The last singleshot match of the year was held Sept 22-23. Fifteen shooters attended the two-day event shooting a variety of single shot matches with smokeless powder, black powder, and .22 rimfire. We are seeing few shooters from out of town these days. Maybe gas prices?? Next spring, we will return the 200 yard .22 rimfire matches to the course of fire. They were quite popular in the past, but were discountinued by a previous chariman. With few out of town shooters, we have plenty of time and room to shoot long range .22. The next match will be rimfire in mid-February. Contact Bob Zimmerman at 253-939-9247 for further information.
